Frequently Asked Questions
About the Adventures
How long do your adventures last?
Your adventure will be approximately 1–2.5 hours in total, depending on how many people are booked for the session and how long participants would like to spend with our dogs.
What is Intro to Mushing?
Intro to Mushing gives participants the opportunity to learn the basics of dryland mushing and, if they feel comfortable, to run their own rig following full instruction and guidance from our team.
What is a sleddog ride?
During a sleddog ride, the participant sits at the front of the rig while our ‘Musher’ guides the dogs from the back. For this reason, there is one participant per ride at a time.
Do I need any prior experience to take part?
No prior experience is required. All of our adventures are fully guided, and we’ll explain everything you need to know before you begin.
Are your adventures suitable for nervous participants?
Yes. Many of our visitors feel nervous beforehand, and that’s completely normal. We take time to explain the session, introduce you to the dogs, and ensure you feel comfortable at every stage. You are never pressured to do anything you are unsure about.
Will I get hands-on time with the dogs?
Yes. Spending time with the dogs is a key part of our adventures. There will be opportunities to meet, fuss, and learn about the dogs during your session.
What’s the difference between a sled, sledge, and sleigh?
Sled: A working or sporting vehicle, built to be pulled by dogs for transport or racing.
Sledge: Commonly used in the UK to describe a child’s snow toy, designed for sliding downhill.
Sleigh: A larger, often decorative vehicle designed to carry passengers rather than for sport or work.
Our adventures use dryland rigs with wheels rather than sleds on snow.
Is Mynydd Sleddog Adventures a big company?
No. Mynydd Sleddog Adventures is a small, independent business owned and run by Joe, with the support of volunteers, a virtual assistant and her team of eager sleddogs. If Joe is unavailable due to illness or unforeseen circumstances, experiences may need to be postponed. We will always communicate with you as early as possible.

Can I buy an adventure as a gift?
Yes, gift vouchers are available and valid for 12 months. They can be purchased via our website.
Can I change the date of my adventure?

Our booking system is ‘live’, so if we do not have capacity to accommodate your group, the system will tell you.

Weather & Postponements
There is a named storm – what happens now?
When the MET Office names an imminent storm, all bookings will be postponed to ensure the safety of our visitors and dogs.
In the UK, the Met Office names any storm when it has the potential to cause disruption or damage. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/34581210
Under the terms of our permission to operate our business on land/forest provided by NRW, we are not allowed to operate during severe weather.
Will my adventure be postponed?
In the event of circumstances beyond our control; we reserve the right to make changes at any time to the adventures we offer. Our business is at the mercy of the elements and therefore on occasion it is necessary to make difficult decisions in order to ensure visitor and dog safety.
Your booking may be postponed for the following reasons:
MET Office Severe Weather Warnings
- Red – YES
- Amber – VERY LIKELY
- Yellow – POSSIBLY
- Thunder & Lightening – YES
We continuously monitor the weather conditions, temperature and humidity, this includes warm weather, heavy rain, storms, snow and ice.
Warm Weather. Working Sled Dogs is a cool weather activity, during warm weather adventures may be postponed until temperatures drop, this will ensure the welfare of our dogs. In these circumstances, we will offer an alternative date or voucher (valid for 12 months).
Heavy Rain & Wind/ Storms. In the event of excessive rain and high winds, we would genuinely be concerned for our dogs welfare, both mentally and physically. In these circumstances, we would likely recommend postponing your adventure to an alternative date or offer a voucher (valid for 12 months).
Snow & Ice. Ideal conditions for sleddogs! However, at present we only offer a ‘Dryland Mushing Adventures’ which is very different to ‘On Snow’. Wheels are used instead of sleds, which are clearly not advisable on snow or icy trails.
We also live in a location that is extremely remote and rarely cleared by snow ploughs, making it almost impossible to venture out, unless in a tractor or 4×4 (and this is not a guarantee of safety). Our dogs are transported to the forest to meet our visitors, which inevitably becomes inaccessible. We do not recommend our visitors attempt to travel in potentially dangerous conditions.
When the roads have cleared we again monitor the trail conditions, if snow thaws and refreezes this becomes extremely dangerous for dogs working. In these circumstances, we would likely recommend postponing your adventure to an alternative date or offer a voucher (valid for 12 months).
